Titi Adesa hopes benefit of BLM is “lasting, not so much fleeting”

Titi Adesanya, founder & creative director of Titi Adesa, speaks with BBC World’s Peter Okwoche on ‘Focus on Africa’ live segment to share her perspective on the long-term infrastructural changes to see across the global landscape, the various important revolutionary movements and current support of black-owned businesses.

Excerpts of the interview below:

ON THE LONG-TERM INPUT TO HELP BLACK-OWNED BUSINESSES

“Honestly, I think the most important thing I would like to see has to be, Representation – across the board. Diversity is great, but I think the real differentiator for change starts from inclusion. And that’s right from the interns all the way up to the execs, making the decisions. I also think as black owners, we need to maintain the highest level of excellence that we already know and strive for as well, and that’s for the generations ahead, not just for us.”

ON THE IMPACT OF THE BLACK LIVES MATTER MOVEMENT FOR BLACK ENTREPRENEURS

“It’s been fantastic if I’m honest, there’s been a huge wave of support. Of course, the revolution itself that is happening is amazing, but we have to note the fact that the circumstances surrounding the revolution are very unfortunate. However, in general, the support so far has been amazing. Here in the UK, we had Black Pound Day which a lot of black-owned brands benefited from, just like mine. So overall, it’s been the right movement in my opinion, and I hope it’s one that is lasting, not so much fleeting.”

ON BEING INCLUDED ON BEYONCE’S CURATED INDEX OF BLACK-OWNED BUSINESSES

“It was an incredible honour. As a ten-month-old brand, it’s wonderful to be included with those other amazing brands. All I can say is Thank you [to Beyonce] and thank you to her stylist as well, Zerina who is the founder of Black Owned Everything and who did the linking – I’m very grateful to them.”

Titi was recently listed and spotlighted by Beyonce on her website as Black owned businesses.
