On this day, 7 years ago Olanipekun ‘Da Grin’ Olaitan was involved in a fatal car crash.
Dagrin died at 6:00pm on Thursday, April 22, 2010, exactly eight days after he was involved in a ghastly motor accident in front of Alakara Police Station, off Agege Motor Road, Mushin, Lagos. The late rapper was admitted at the Intensive Care Unit and operated upon, and later moved to the private wing of the hospital. Eight days of nationwide panic, the media didn’t have to play anything up; the pictures from the accident, were enough to send shivers down our spine, the photos from the hospital; of a lifeless, looking Dagrin, a sharp contrast from the animated artiste, stamped sadness on many faces.
Da Grin’s influence is still been felt with the success of Olamide and a gandful of other indigenous rapper. Interestingly, Olamide never met the late Da Grin. Even without a direct physical encounter, Olamide admits that Dagrin was instrumental as a forerunner of indigenous music, paving the way for the younger generation of rappers to prosper.
“Actually he did. He paved way for people like me, as well as Lord of Ajasa. Lord of Ajasa paved the way for people like me, Idris Abdulkareem, the likes of AY, Junior & Pretty. It’s a movement, it has to keep going on. Every now and then, every new set of artistes that come out, they have to pave the way for a new generation.
