Spotify in South Africa this month

Music streaming service Spotify will launch in South Africa this month. What was one of the worst-kept secrets in the music industry – after an advert was spotted for a “Senior Editor/Music Programmer – South Africa” by Stuff magazine last year – has been confirmed with an invite to a major news announcement next week.

“Spotify has some news to share. Please join us on Tuesday, 13th March to catch all the details,” the invitation stated.

Spotify is the gold standard for streaming, which has become the dominant form of consuming music. “Spotify is the world’s largest global music streaming subscription service with a community of over 159-million users, including over 71-million Spotify Premium subscribers, across 61 markets,” the email invite reads.

South Africans have been able to stream the service by being a premium customer in other markets, typically the United States.
