SOUNDCITY had a quick chat with Daps. Read excerpts from the conversation below (Missed the former feature on him, read here):
on meeting Wizkid?
I’ve known Wizkid for a few years. He called me and said he wanted to go over some ideas, so we linked up in LA.
on the Kaleidoscopic theme for ‘come closer’ video?
We wanted something to give the video an extra kick without doing too much. That was added in after the main edit and grade had been completed.
on models in the video?
One of Wiz’s points for this piece was to show black women in a certain light — to have them looking majestic. Which is also in line with my thoughts for certain projects. It’s good to mix things up and not always show a group of people the same way. And besides, who doesn’t like chocolate?
on Drake’s absence?
I just do my job with the cards that are dealt, and I do it well.
on Afrobeats going int’l?
I think it’s great. And I would love Nigeria to be the Jamaica of Africa in terms of exporting our culture, music, fashion, food — Jamaica has done a good job of that. Afrobeats is going to be the torch that brings the eyes and ears to the continent.
I don’t think there’s any cookie-cutter way to deal with foreign labels. But in short, people need to stay true to who they are, and don’t let others capitalize incorrectly on what they’ve built.
on What should we look out for, from Daps?
A lot, ha ha. More videos, TV, film, fashion. Watch the wave.
