Hope you’re hungry, because Nicki Minaj is serving up some prime, grade-A beef between her and fellow rapper Remy Ma, and we were all unprepared.

The internet went into collective freakout mode on Thursday night after rapper Gucci Mane released a new track, “Make Love,” featuring Nicki Minaj.

On the track Nicki raps:

“Oooohhh, oh you the qu-e-e-the queen of this here?/

One platinum plaque, album flopped, bitch, where? (bitch, where?)…

You see, silly rabbit, to be the queen of rap/

You gotta sell records, you gotta get plaques.”

Little background, here: Nicki Minaj has famously declared herself the Queen of Rap, on several occasions—including but not limited to her feature on Ariana Grande’s “Side to Side” (“I’m the queen of rap, young Ariana run pop”) and her feature on Rae Sremmurd’s “No Flex Zone – Remix” (“Run this game for 5 years/ guess that’s why my feet hurt…Yes, I am an icon, that’s me on your t-shirt”).

And many considered this “Make Love” verse to be the clapback at Remy Ma everyone’s been waiting for.

So: Why would Nicki Minaj be clapping back at Remy Ma, you ask?

On December 25, 2016—because shade does not take time off for Christmas— New York rapper Phresher released a video for his song “Wait A Minute (Remix)” featuring Remy Ma. And in the song Remy Ma raps,

“Will I smoke this bitch? Yes/

Probably fail my piss test/

Get rid of those fake breasts/

And put a vest on this bitch chest.”

The lyrics pinged the internet’s collective shade barometer as a shot at Nicki Minaj and her then-boyfriend Meek Mill (who’d previously failed a urine test and was put on house arrest).

Nicki never responded. Until this new Gucci Mane track. A move that had even American treasure Issa Rae like: “Sis, don’t.”

Because sure enough, Remy Ma opened the library and read Nicki for filth, by releasing “Shether,” a scorching hot 7-minute diss track the likes of which the world hasn’t seen since Drake famously eviscerated Meek Mill in 2015.

And the internet did what it does when there’s great beef: ate it up, and lost its damn mind.
