New Music: Wyclef Jean feat. Young Thug – ‘I Swear’

The budding musical partnership that lies between Young Thug and Wyclef Jean has given fans another new song. Following their collaboration on “Elton,” the duo is back at it with “I Swear.”

Upbeat and catchy, “I Swear” allows ‘Clef to sing about his devotion and loyalty. “Ain’t nobody breakin’ us up,” he sings. “I’ma stay with you forever, girl / And I swear / Know that you were here from the start / You ain’t goin’ nowhere.”

Thugger adds to the theme with rhymes about his future honeymoon and Tom Cruise-like tendencies. “Sprinklin’ flowers over you,” rhymes Jeffery. “Stand on the couch, baby, I’m wildin’ over you.” Then, he also adds a punchline to the mix. “East Coast, West Coast, goin’ shoppin’ / Change the way that you dress, Thousand Island.”

Of course, the bond is strong between these two. Thug even named his Jeffery intro after the Fugees star, who has compared him to Tupac Shakur.

“He’s from a project, I’m from a similar background,” Wyclef told Pigeons & Planes. “He has a natural love for Haiti, understanding the history of Haiti. Haiti is the first black republic. He reminded me of a modern Tupac, in a sense—in a revolutionary sense.”

“I Swear” can be found on Wyclef’s forthcoming EP J’ouvert, due Jan. 27. In addition to Thug, J’ouvert also features Walk the Moon and others.

It all leads up to Wyclef’s full-length album, Carnival III: Road to Clefication, which arrives next summer on the 20th anniversary of his debut The Carnival.
