It’s been a few months since Serena Williams gave birth to her daughter, Alexis Olympia, and the tennis star is opening up about how she almost lost her life after giving birth.

According to TMZ, Serena had to have an emergency C-section on Sept. 1st after Olympia’s heart began to drop during contractions.

The C-section was a success but when she spoke to CNN.com she said “what followed just 24 hours after giving birth were six days of uncertainty.”

Serena said she suffered a pulmonary embolism, which is Aa condition in which one or more arteries in the lungs become blocked by a blood clot.

Her condition got so bad that she ended up popping her C-section wound open, from excessive coughing, and had to have an emergency surgery.

After spending 6 weeks on bed rest, Serena was back on her feet. She thanked the “incredible medical team of doctors and nurses at a hospital with state-of-the-art equipment.”
